The song that really stood out to me, Blueberry Yum Yum. However, by the time I got to be 11 or 12 years old I started to realize more of what Luda was rapping about. The songs had hard beats and were just so good I didn’t need to know. Of course, at 7 years old I didn’t understand what most of Ludacris’ words and metaphors meant.

This album taught me what a stack is in gambling terms, told me “scared money don’t make none!”, how to not take shit from anyone, how to drive your car slow so everybody sees you, and probably most important it made me want to smoke weed so damn bad. Ludacris went all out with this album, making it a multimedia production with a DVD about his adventures in Amsterdam, the city famous for their weed and Red Light District. He was in your face, loud, his metaphors were hilarious and his videos were almost always instant classics. I remember seeing him all over MTV and MTV2 not just in music videos but on Cribs, on TRL, and everywhere else on MTV’s programming. The early 2000s were a time when Ludacris was arguably the best rapper in the game. The intro includes Ludacris bolstering, “Last album they don’t like me to tell this/debuted at number one and sold more records than Elvis!” followed shortly with, “And if you not feeling I’m the cream of the crop/I’ll knock rappers off your list till I get to the top.” He flatly states he was carrying Def Jam on his back and if you don’t believe that, Luda ends the intro on this note, “I’m the BEST and I ain’t really gotta say that shit!” The Red Light District went double platinum and it’s obvious why. I couldn’t get enough of this album, it was catchy every song on the album was great (and still holds up). My collection at this point included Lil’ Romeo’s self-titled album (certified gold in just 3 weeks, debuted at #6 in 2001), Green Day’s American Idiot, and Shaggy’s Hot Shot. Thankfully I had a walkman CD player at the time and I kept listening to this album. He’s burning a $100 bill and staring hard as fuck into the camera. The album cover features Luda sitting in what appears to be an orange booth at a club or bar, he sits leaning forward wearing a red vest, hat, and huge diamonds on his ears and on his ring finger. I believe my brother chose an Eminem CD and while I was looking for something to choose I remembered Ludacris and the “Get Back” video. While our grandma is a very religious woman who didn’t really get what rap music was, she allowed us to pick one CD apiece. Thankfully, my brother was just as into it as I was.ĭuring our stay this particular winter break, we went to Wal-Mart, and being the spoiled grandchildren we were around our grandma, we got to pick an early Christmas present. Every chance I got to watch that video, I did. The comically large arms and aggressive lyrics drew me in. That November he had released his single “Get Back” and the legendary video that came with it left an impression on me as a 7-year-old. I remember watching Panic! At the Disco and Xzibit, but there was one artist above them all. This is when MTV2 was given all of the music shows and you could actually catch hours of music playing. Grandma had all the kids channels, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, two kinds of Disney, and even more important to the growth of my brother and me, MTV and MTV2. I could be wrong about that, but that’s when I remember first having more than 20 channels or so on the antenna.

I don’t think my family had cable TV until I was almost 10 years old.
There was another part of grandma’s that was special to my brother and me.she had cable! She kept birds of all kinds in her backyard from chickens to pheasants, guineas, and geese. She usually had some kittens running around, mostly feral, or a few dogs.
My brother and I loved going to our dad’s mother’s house. During this time in my life, it was common to spend long periods of time with my grandma near Rough River during school breaks and things since both of my parents worked. It was the winter of 2004, I was 7 years old.
